Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about our electrical services? Here are answers to the most common questions we receive. If you can't find what you're looking for, give us a call.

General Questions

Are you NAPIT registered?

Yes, MB Electrical Contractors is fully registered with NAPIT (National Association of Professional Inspectors and Testers). This means all our work is carried out to the highest standards and we can self-certify notifiable work for Building Regulations compliance.

What areas do you cover?

We cover all of North Yorkshire including York, Harrogate, Scarborough, Ripon, Malton, Thirsk, Northallerton, Whitby, and surrounding areas. Contact us to confirm we cover your location.

Do you offer free quotes?

Yes, we provide free, no-obligation quotes for all work. For larger jobs, we'll visit your property to assess the work required before providing a detailed quote.

Do I need to be home during electrical work?

For most work, you don't need to be home as long as we have access to the property and the consumer unit. However, for larger jobs like rewires, it's helpful if you're available at the start and end of each day.

Rewiring Questions

How much does a house rewire cost?

The cost depends on property size, age, and complexity. A typical 3-bedroom semi ranges from £3,000-£5,000. Contact us for a free quote tailored to your property.

How long does a rewire take?

A typical 3-bedroom house takes 5-7 working days. We work efficiently to minimise disruption and can often work room by room to maintain power to parts of your home.

Will I need to move out during a rewire?

Not usually. We can work room by room and maintain power to essential areas. Some customers choose to stay elsewhere for convenience, but it's not necessary.

Will the walls need replastering?

Some making good is required where cables are chased into walls. We minimise damage and can arrange plastering if needed, or you can arrange your own decorator.

EICR Questions

How often do I need an EICR?

Landlords: Every 5 years or at each change of tenancy (legally required). Homeowners: Every 10 years recommended. Businesses: Every 3-5 years depending on risk assessment.

What happens if my EICR fails?

If issues are found, we'll provide a clear report explaining what needs to be done. We can then quote for and carry out any remedial work required to bring your installation up to standard.

How long does an EICR take?

For a typical 3-bedroom house, an EICR takes 2-3 hours. Larger or more complex properties take longer. We'll provide an estimated duration when booking.

Consumer Unit Questions

How long does a consumer unit upgrade take?

Most consumer unit upgrades are completed in one day, typically 4-6 hours. The power will be off during this time.

Do I need Building Control approval?

Consumer unit changes are notifiable work under Building Regulations. As a NAPIT registered electrician, we can self-certify the work and handle the notification for you.
